You want to know when the countertops will arrive and when you can use your kitchen again. Those dates depend on different parts of the job. The countertop installation process includes material selection, jobsite preparation, digital templating, shop fabrication, and installation, followed by care instructions and any required trade reconnections.
For qualifying projects, IntelliStone offers a six-day turnaround from template to installation, backed by a 99% on-time installation record. That production window is one part of the renovation schedule.
Here is how the work moves forward, what needs to be ready, and what to confirm before you schedule the next trade.
How Long Does the Countertop Installation Process Take?
For qualifying projects, our turnaround is six days from template to installation. Material availability and project scope affect eligibility and timing, so confirm the schedule for your specific job with our team.
It helps to separate three parts of the timeline:
- Selection and preparation: Choosing the material and getting the jobsite ready for accurate measurement.
- Template to installation: Measuring the prepared space, fabricating the countertops, and bringing the finished pieces to the jobsite.
- Installation and return to use: Setting the surfaces, allowing required curing, and completing any follow-on work or trade reconnections.
The size and complexity of the layout, along with installation access, affect the time the crew needs on site. We will discuss that as part of the project schedule rather than apply one hour estimate to every kitchen.
Our 99% on-time installation record refers to installations on the scheduled date. It does not mean every renovation is complete that day.
Before making arrangements, confirm the removal date, installation date, and earliest appropriate time for reconnection. These establish the period your household may be without a working sink or cooking area.
Step 1: Choose the Material and Confirm the Details
Start with the surface you want to live with. At our Franklin showroom and Slab Gallery, we help you compare natural stone and engineered quartz against your kitchen’s design and everyday use.
Bring plans and cabinet or finish samples when available. If quartz and granite are on your shortlist, our material comparison can help you prepare questions about care and performance.
Selection also includes the details that affect fabrication. Confirm the sink model, cooktop specifications, and faucet arrangement. Discuss the edge profile and any seating overhang or waterfall panel in the design.
Keep the people making those decisions connected. If your designer specifies a sink and your builder orders a different model, the change needs to reach our team before the opening is cut.
Changes remain possible at some stages, but they may affect the layout or schedule. Ask before changing a fixture or cabinet position so we can explain the implications.
Step 2: Prepare the Space for Digital Templating
Digital templating needs the conditions the countertop will sit on. Preliminary dimensions are useful for planning, but they do not replace professional measurements of the prepared space.
Before the templating appointment, confirm that:
- Cabinets and countertop support areas are installed, secured, level, and in their final positions.
- Sink, cooktop, and faucet specifications are confirmed, with actual fixtures available when our team requires them.
- Overhangs and support requirements have been reviewed for the design and material.
- The measurement area is accessible.
- The person needed for project decisions is available according to the appointment instructions.
If cabinet installation is still underway, tell us. Measuring against a temporary position can create problems once the cabinets move or the final support conditions change.
For a countertop replacement, ask when the existing surface needs to be removed. That depends on the job and measurement plan. Removing it early without confirming the sequence can extend the disruption to your kitchen.
We will review readiness with you or your builder before the appointment.
Step 3: Create the Digital Template and Plan the Layout
Our team digitally templates the jobsite to record its actual dimensions and conditions. Walls and corners may differ from what appears on an original plan, particularly in an established home.
The field measurements guide the countertop layout. Confirmed fixture information guides the openings. The selected slab’s dimensions and pattern help determine how the pieces can be arranged and where seams may be required.
For natural stone with pronounced movement, talk about the areas you want to feature. A vein running across the island may influence the layout and material needed. A seam may interrupt the pattern even when it is carefully planned.
Digital measurements support accurate fabrication, but they cannot account for changes made afterward without review. If a cabinet moves, an overhang changes, or a different sink is selected, notify us before cutting begins.
This is the stage to resolve questions about the plan while the material can still be laid out accordingly.
Step 4: Fabricate the Countertops In-House
The digital template returns to our Franklin facility, where our craftsmen use it to guide CNC cutting and edge polishing. The confirmed layout directs the pieces and openings that will become your countertops.
Our team checks the fabricated work against the project specifications before installation. Keeping the work in-house means field questions and production questions stay with IntelliStone. You have one company to contact when a detail needs clarification.
We have installed more than 1.2 million square feet of countertops across Middle Tennessee. That work includes projects with different materials and room requirements, all of which depend on connecting measurements to fabrication.
During this stage, keep us informed of anything that changes at the jobsite. A finished piece made for one cabinet arrangement may not fit a revised layout without additional work.
Step 5: Get Ready for the Installation Crew
Countertops are heavy, and the crew needs a clear route from delivery to the work area. Before installation day, remove clutter from entry paths and arrange access to the kitchen. Keep children and pets away from active work.
Ask what needs to be emptied beneath the countertops and what protection the crew provides. If stairs, narrow doorways, or access restrictions affect delivery, discuss them ahead of time.
Confirm who handles removal and disposal of the existing countertops. Those responsibilities belong in the project agreement. The same applies to plumbing, electrical, or gas disconnection where required; arrange that work with qualified trades rather than assuming it is included with countertop installation.
Plan for the household’s needs during the interruption. Set aside essential kitchen items and arrange another place for simple food preparation. Your builder or remodeler can help coordinate the surrounding work, but the removal and reconnection dates should be confirmed with the relevant teams.
Step 6: Install, Check the Fit, and Review the Work
Our own installation crew delivers the fabricated pieces, checks their fit, and sets the countertops according to the project plan. The crew completes the joints and agreed installation details.
Expect activity and some noise while the work takes place. Keep the installation area available to the crew and wait for guidance before using or loading the new surface.
Before handoff, review the work with the team. Look at the edges and seams, and confirm the completed openings against the agreed layout. If something concerns you, ask while the crew is present so the question can be addressed clearly.
A finished sink opening, or a sink set as part of the agreed scope, does not necessarily include plumbing reconnection. Confirm who will complete that work and when it can happen.
This walkthrough also establishes the point of contact after installation. You should know whom to call with a question about the fitted surface or the work completed.
What Happens After Countertop Installation?
Follow the instructions provided for your installation. Adhesives, supported fixtures, and the work completed can affect when the countertop or sink is ready for use. There is no single waiting period that should be applied to every job.
Arrange reconnections for the timing approved by the installation team and the relevant trades. If backsplash work or other finishing follows, confirm how it fits into the remaining schedule.
You will also need care guidance for the selected material. Quartz does not need sealing, while natural stone may have a treatment plan specific to the slab. Ask before applying a cleaner or product that was intended for your previous countertop.
Every job IntelliStone installs is warrantied. Review the warranty information provided for your project and keep our contact details with your care instructions. If a concern comes up later, you know which team handled the work.
Questions About Countertop Installation
What Needs to Be Ready Before Countertop Templating?
The cabinets and support areas need to be secured, level, and in their final positions. Fixture specifications and layout decisions also need to be confirmed. Our team will explain what must be available for your appointment, including any actual fixtures needed for measurement.
Do I Need to Remove My Old Countertops Before the Appointment?
Ask our team before arranging removal. The correct timing depends on the replacement scope and measurement plan. Confirm who removes the existing surface and when, so you avoid unnecessary time without a usable kitchen or incomplete preparation for the crew.
Does the Six-Day Turnaround Cover My Entire Renovation?
No. For qualifying projects, the six-day window runs from template to countertop installation. Material selection, cabinet readiness, and follow-on trade work are separate parts of the schedule. Confirm your project dates rather than applying the production window to the whole renovation.
Will the Countertop Crew Reconnect the Plumbing?
Check the project agreement. Countertop installation does not automatically include plumbing reconnection, electrical work, or gas work. Confirm the responsible qualified trade and arrange its return around the installation team’s guidance for curing and fixture use.
When Can I Use the Sink and Countertops After Installation?
Use them when the installation team confirms they are ready and the necessary connections are complete. Timing depends on the work performed and the materials used. Get instructions for your job before loading the surface or scheduling trades to reconnect fixtures.
